YUDHOYONO, MEGAWATI DON'T NEED MEDIATOR TO MEND RELATIONS : MINISTER

Luwuk, Banggai, C Sulawesi, March 24 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and his predecessor, Megawati Soekarnoputri, actually do not need a mediator to forge cordial relations, a minister said.

"Mediation is actually not needed for the two leaders to have a friendly relations with each other," Youth and Sports Affairs Minister Adhyaksa Dault said here Tuesday at a meeting with village and sub-district chiefs of Banggai district, Central Sulawesi province.

The two national leaders should develop an attitude towards each other that could serve as model, the minister said.

"How can this country be blessed if its leaders are not united.

Indonesians can enjoy prosperity only after their leaders and the people live in unity," Adhyaksa said.

Megawati Soekarnoputri is chairwoman of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), and Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, chairman of the Democratic Party (PD)'s advisory board.

Previously, presidential spokesman Andi Mallarangeng said there was no need for a mediator in a planned meeting between President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Megawati Soekarnoputri.

He also said the President had met with a number of former presidents, and the latest ones were BJ Habibie, Gus Dur, and Soeharto when the latter was ill.

He said Indonesians, especially the country's younger generation, should live in unity. "Regardless of which ethnic group, religion or political party they belong to , all of them should preserve unity," he said.

Adhyaksa said the military and police should also be strong to prevent the nation from disintegration.

About the April 9, 2009 legislative elections, he said all parties should make the poll a success by using their voting right to elect qualified and trustworthy legislators.

Around 12,000 candidates from 38 national political parties vying for 560 House seats, and six local parties will also participate in the polls, ahead of a presidential election on July 8.
