MINISTER ASKS PARTY CAMPAIGNERS NOT TO EXPLOIT KORANIC VERSES

Cisarua, Bogor, March 24 (ANTARA) - Religious Affairs Minister Muhammad Maftuh Basyuni has warned legislative candidates and political parties against exploiting Koranic verses in their election campaigns.

Speaking to participants of a Muslim Clerics National Working Congress here on Monday night, Basyuni said legislative candidates and political parties should not exploit holy Koranic verses only to gain public support in the upcoming legislative elections.

The minister repeated his admonition at a function to open a West Java Regional Health Office working meeting in Ciloto on Monday.

"The elections are a momentary event. Do not 'sell' Koranic verses to gain votes in this year's general elections," Basyuni said.

He said the political atmosphere in the runup to the legislative and presidential elections was heating up and this could lead to various problems if people were not careful.

To avoid frictions and misunderstandings during the campaigns, the minister on the occasion asked Muslim clerics and public figures to serve as facilitators of efforts to maintain the state and nation's unity and integrity.

"Koranic teachings are eternal while the elections are only a momentary event. Therefore legislative candidates and political parties in staging electoral campaigns should not arbitrarily exploit Koranic verses for their own political interest," Basyuni said.

He said the elections were a process and a way to make the people prosper, and therefore it would be naive for the people to be trapped in a continuing crisis while ignoring the true objective of the nation.

The minister expressed hope that national unity and integrity would not be disturbed merely because of group or individual interests.

He said Muslim clerics should act as protectors of the people and guide them in the ways of Koranic principles.
