GARUDA PLANE LANDS AT REOPENED NARITA AIRPORT
Tokyo, March 24 (ANTARA) - A Garuda Jetliner was able to land at Tokyo's Narita International Airport here Tuesday after the airport's main runway was closed following a plane crash that killed two crew members.
Garuda Indonesia station manager at Narita , Nuralim Nugrahono, said the airport's main runway was closed on Monday after a FedEx Corp cargo plane from Guangzhou, China, crashed and burst into flames as it landed, killing the plane's crew of two.
"Narita airport has been reopened since 9:07 this morning and therefore Garuda flight GA-880 from Jakarta was able to land at 10:51 a.m. local time," Nuralim said.
He said the runway at the busy gateway to Tokyo was reopened after the authority cleared the debris of the ill-fated cargo plane.
Following the accident of the FedEx Corp cargo plane, an MD-11 made by McDonnell Douglas, all arriving flights were diverted to Tokyo's Haneda airport and other airports in Nagoya and Osaka.
According to Nuralim, the cause of the accident was still under investigation but it was believed that the ill-fated plane was caught in a gust of wind before it crashed.
But he said air traffic at Narita airport had returned to normal and a Garuda jetliner from Jakarta could land at 10:52 a.m. local time, although it was scheduled to arrive at 7:20 in the morning.
Meanwhile Garuda Indonesian General Manager M. Riza Perdana Kusuma said all Garuda passengers who were diverted to Nagoya on Monday had returned to Tokyo.
