RI, LIBYA AGREE TO STEP UP COOPERATION

Yogyakarta, March 24 (ANTARA) - Indonesia and Libya have agreed to step up their bilateral cooperation, Foreign Affairs Minister Hassan Wirayuda said here on Tuesday.
"The agreement is embodied in three memoranda of understanding (MoUs) which were signed just now," Wirayuda said after the signing of the MoUs.
He said the two countries in a joint commission meeting in Yogyakarta on Tuesday had agreed to improve relations in various sectors.
The three MoUs were about political consultations, cooperation in people's welfare, and the formation of an Indonensia-Libya Commission.
According to the foreign affairs minister, possibilities of cooperation in the economic field were to be explored intensively by Indonesia and Libya.
"The value of trade between the two countries is recorded at US$400 million, while the value of various projects carried out by Indonesia in Libya reaches more than US$1.2 billion," he said.
But he added the figures were still far from the potential which could be developed by the two countries.
Wirayuda said the Libyan government would also give wider opportunities to Indonesian businessmen who intended to invest in construction and infrastructure in Libya.
He said the two countries would also cooperate in exploration of mineral resources, especially oil and natural gas.
"National companies such as Pertamina can conduct oil and natural gas explorations in Libya, and the Libyan government even has a plan to buy aircraft produced by PT Dirgantara Indonesia," he said.
To follow up the trade cooperation agreement, Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu would make a working visit to Libya from April 3-5, 2009.
"From the visit, it is expected that other new agreements in trade cooperation can be signed," Wirayuda said, adding that cooperation in the political field would be realized in political consultation related to global issues.
The Libyan delegation at the meeting in Yogyakarta was led by the country's Social Affairs Minister Ibrahim AM Al Sharif who said that the cooperation agreement in politics, social, economy, and culture had a positive influence at regional and international levels.
During his visit to Indonesia, the Libyan social affairs minister would make a coutesy call on Yogyakarta Governor Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X, besides visiting Borobudur temple and an earthquake management center in Bantul district.
