CHINA BECOMES MAIN MARKET OF INDONESIA'S COFFEE EXPORTS

Medan, Mar 24 (ANTARA) - Indonesia's coffee exporters have declared the market in China and the Middle East as their new destinations as the purchasing power of the commodity's traditional buyers the United States and Europe dropped following the global crisis.

"This decision has started bearing fruits, because our company managed to boost its exports by 145 percent in the September 2008 - February 2009 period despite the still raging global crisis," Director of PT Coffindo Irfan Irfan Anwar said here Tuesday.

He said that in February 2009 his company managed to export some 200 tons of coffee beans to the United States, Europe, Japan, China, Thailand and the Middle East.

Why is it that the exports could be boosted amidst the current global crisis, he said because the management had carried out several strategies including market expansion to new countries of destination without in any way abandoning the previous destinations while maintaining the quality of the commodity, he said in the company of his marketing director Jelfi Chen.

Giving an example, he said his company would buy the commodity from the collecting traders or the growers only if the coffee beans had passed the coffee quality testing facility.

The company alsoi installed CCTV at the company accessible by the buyers, so that the transparency raised the added-value of the commodity offered by Coffindo.

PT Coffindo, he said, also planned retail sales to a number of countries as another strategy on market expansion and sales promotion. "The company's coffee beans could later be obtained in small sizes/packages like in five-kilogram packages," he said.

Nevertheless, he added, the government needs to play a role to boost the company's exports.

It was also necessary to support the development of the infrastructure like the port in Belawan where facilities were still a minimum, which would raise production cost, including claims for scheduled coffee bean shipments and reception in purchasing country.
