PRESIDENT ASSURES BUSINESSMEN OF GOVT'S COMMITMENT TO ADDRESS CRISIS
Jakarta, March 24 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono Tuesday met with 30 foreign investors and local businessmen to assure them of the government's commitment to address the impact of the global financial crisis.
The president also took the chance to seek views from the businessmen on how best to achieve the country's economic growth rate target of 4.5 percent for this year.
"You not only work in Indonesia but also know what to do for Indonesia," he said.
He asked the businessmen to work together with the government to seek a wayout of the global financial crisis.
The head of state further reiterated the government's seven key priorities in the economic sector to address the impact of the global economic slowdown. The measures include lowering unemployment rate, controlLing inflation rate, and maintaining the people's purchasing power.
He said Indonesia still could withstand the global financial crisis because the country's exports only accounted for 29 percent of its gross domestic product (GDP).
To address the impact of the global crisis, the government had launched an economic stimulus which would cost Rp73.7 trillion, he said adding part of the funds had been disbursed since January in the form of tax reduction.
Unlike in the 1997 monetary crisis engulfing a number of Asian countries, the Indonesian banking industry was currently healthy and stable, he said.
Also present at the meeting were Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu, acting Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Sri Mulyani Indrawati, State Enterprises Minister Sofyan Djalil, Industry Minister Fahmi Idris, Minister/State Secretary Hatta Radjasa, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Widodo AS, and Police Chief Gen. Bambang Hendarso Danuri.
