FORTY-NINE BODIES FOUND IN SITU GINTUNG DAM BURST
Jakarta, March 27 (ANTARA) - Until 13:30 West Indonesian Standard Time (WIB), rescue teams have found the bodies of 49 dead victims of early Friday morning's Situ Gintung dam burst in Cerendeu, Ciputat, Tangerang district, Banten province.
A spokeman of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Adjunct Commissioner Chryshnanda said here on Friday of the total number of dead victims recovered so far, two could not yet be identified.
The victims were immediately rushed to Fatmawati General Hospital but only two victims were accommodated at the post of Muhammadiyah University and Achmad Dahlan School of Economics(STIE).
"It is believed a large number of people have gone missing in the dam burst but the rescue teams are still searching for them," he said.
He said at about 12.45 WIB this afternoon, a part of the dam had slid damaging three more houses of local residents.
The Jakarta Metropolitan police, South Jakarta district police, Ciputat police together with local residents and university students as well as members of relevant agencies were also involved in the search for still missing people.
In the meantime, the National Police Headquarters had also deployed around 500 personnel to help evacuate the victims of the disaster.
Until now, the police were reported to have no knowledge of police personnel having fallen victims in the incident because the Women's Police School was reported to have also been inundated by two-meter high water from the dam burst.
The aging Situ Gintung Dam collapsed because it was unable to accommodate more water on account of heavy rains which poured down in some districts in Banten and West Java provinces all night long on Thursday.
Tens of houses were washed away by the overflowing water from the collapsed dam and destroyed tens of other houses in the vicinity of the dam.***
