GOVT CALLS IN JAPANESE EXPERTS TO REPAIR DAM

Jakarta, March 27 (ANTARA) - The government immediately summoned Japanese consultants to help repair the dam that burst early on Friday killing 49 people.

Public Works Minister Djoko Kirmanto said at the site of the disaster in Cirendeu, Tangerang, on Friday that repair work on the Situ Gintung dam would be immediately started.

"It will be started immediately. I have summoned Japanese consultants for it. I summoned them directly," he said.

He said his office would hold a meeting on Saturday with the Japanese construction experts to discuss a new Situ Gintung dam construction.

"They will meet at the office tomorrow to prepare a good design," he said.

For the time being, he said a stone cushion would be built to support the remaining wall to prevent it from sliding. "This is an emergency action. Permanent construction still has yet to be planned. It is for the time being handled by the central government," he said.

The minister said that actions to deal with the incident was categorized as an emergency response.

He said in technical terms the dam burst because it could not accommodate inflow of water which was very big at the time.

The big inflow of water made the 60-year old dam burst. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono when inspecting the site called for reconstruction of the dam with good quality and planning.***
