Colombo, Mar 27 (PTI) Aiming to capture the entire
LTTE-held territory, Sri Lankan troops killed 29 rebels in
fierce clashes in the last Tiger bastions of Puthukudiyiruppu
and Iranapali in the island's north, from where over 2100
Tamil civilians crossed over to the government areas.
"LTTE rebels are facing a definite defeat as
government security forces have already confined the terrorist
to an area about 21.5 sq km including the No Fire Zone which
was declared by the Sri Lankan government to ensure the safety
of the innocent Tamil civilians forcibly held by the rebels,"
the Defence Ministry said Friday.
Troops of 58 Division heavily confronted with LTTE
fighters in general area of Pudukudiyirippu and Iranapali in
Mullaittivu causing considerable damages to the enemy.
In a subsequent search operation conducted in the area
following hours-long fighting, troops have found 13 bodies of
LTTE militants killed during the confrontation.
Separately, army snipers deployed in forward defences
in Puthukudiyiruppu gunned down 16 rebels ahead of the own
defence line, a military report said.
A total of 2108 Tamil civilians who had been trapped
by the LTTE were able to reach government controlled area
"escaping terror grip yesterday" the defence ministry said.
Military Spokesman Udaya Nanayakkara said, a total of
58,000 Tamil civilians have escaped from the Tiger held areas
to the government side so far.
The group of escapees comprising 571 males, 597
females and 940 children reached troops of 58 Division in
general area Pudukuduirippu during day hours Thursday.
Advancing Lankan troops liberated the Sivinagar Tamil
school in Pudukudiyiruppu occupied by the LTTE for their
activities, the military said.
"Military operations are in progress North of
Pudukudiyirippu as troops of 55 Division are steadily
approaching towards the fourth earth bund built by the LTTE to
resist the security forces advancing," the ministry said.
Heavy fighting erupted between security forces and
LTTE through out the day Thursday in the region.
Infantrymen of the Lankan army reached an LTTE
earthbund and have forced the effective gunfire to breach the
LTTE defence in the area.
Troops of 57 Division conducting search and clear
operations in recently liberated areas in Ramanatpuram and
Tharmapuram have uncovered more LTTE military items left
behind by the fleeing Tiger rebels.
Meanwhile, troops of 55 Division fired at LTTE
movement detected in general area Pokkaruppu in late night on
Wednesday, the military said adding in a search operation
troops have found a claymore mine weighing 10Kg, military
report said.
The escapees were later directed to the welfare
centres established in Kilinochchi after providing them with
food, medical treatment and other necessities, defence sources
said. PTI TVS
