CPI(M) warns against India turning into 'surrogate' of US
New Delhi, Mar 28 (PTI) Stressing the need for an
independent foreign policy, the Communist Party of
India-Marxist (CPI-M) Saturday said India cannot play an
"effective role" in the region if it is seen as a "surrogate"
of the United States.
"India cannot play an effective role in the region if it
is seen as a surrogate of the United States and only an
independent foreign policy can give it a proper place in the
region," CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury said here.
He said the agreement signed by Prime Minister Manmohan
Singh and then US President George Bush was not "just another
energy deal as claimed but it was the centrepiece of the
strategy to draw India into the US camp".
The public justification given for the deal was that it
was necessary to address India's need for energy needs,
Yechury charged.
"It is clear that nuclear energy is not going to meet
more than 5-6 per cent of India's energy needs," he alleged.
