BANTEN HEALTH SERVICE SENDS ANOTHER 100 BODY BAGS GINTUNG DISASTER SITE

Serang, Banten, March 29 (ANTARA) - The health service office of Banten province was still sending 100 body bags on Sunday to the site of the Situ Gintung tragedy because over 100 victims were still missing.

The health service's secretary, Dadang M. Epid, said here on Sunday that over 100 victims were not yet found so that his office had to send another 100 body bags.

Up to Sunday evening, rescue workers had found 97 bodies in the tragedy location. Evacuation teams still continued to work hard in order to find more missing victims.

The health service has also increased the number of its medical personnel to help the victims including 25 doctors and nurses.

A total of 360 survivors are now sheltered in two university campuses because their houses were flattened by the rushing flood water which escaped through the burst of dam.

About 4 a.m on Friday, the Situ Gintung reservoir in Cireundeu vilalge, Ciputat subditrict, Tangerang district, Banten, collapsed.

The dam burst which followed heavy rains last Thursday night had caused the 255-meter long section of the dam to burst, releasing the huge body of water from its 20-hectare lake into the lower lying residential areas inundating hundreds of houses in its path as far as about one kilometers to the north.

Abut 300 houses were damaged by the flash floods which killed at least 97 people, causing over 100 gone missing and inuring 160 others.***3***
