BJP condemns NSA on Varun, Cong,CPI-M,NC say it is a good step

New Delhi, Mar 30 (PTI) Invoking of the stringent
National Security Act (NSA) against Varun Gandhi drew a mixed
response today with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)
condemning it as a "misuse of a serious law" and a political
conspiracy by the Mayawati government and its leader L K
Advani saying the step reminded of actions during Emergency.

But the Congress, CPI-M and the National Conference
justified the Uttar Pradesh government's decision to slap the
National Security Act(NSA) provisions on the BJP nominee from
Pilibhit constituency as a good step.

"A very strong.... tough message needed to be sent that
no hate speech will be tolerated against any community and it
has been sent," CPI-M Politburo member Brinda Karat said.

Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said anyone who
breaks law on divisive lines has to be dealt with sternly by
the state government concerned since law and order is a state
subject. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National
Conference leader Omar Abdullah described as good the "strong
stand" taken by the UP government.

29-year-old Varun's mother Maneka Gandhi, the sitting BJP
MP from Pilibhit, putting up a strong defence of his son said
he has been targeted. "What has happened with Varun is
injustice to him and injustice to the country because misuse
of such a serious law is, I think, very dangerous for the
country."

Advani, BJP's prime ministerial candidate, roundly
condemned slapping the NSA against a poll candidate and said
it is a conspiracy by the UP Government. "The NSA was used by
the government during the Emergency days," he said. PTI TEAM
