ERRANT PLASTIC SURGEON SUSPENDED FOR FOUR MONTHS

Jakarta, Mar 30 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Physicians' Association (IDI) has forbidden one of its members, a plastic surgeon, to practice for four months for "violating profesional discipline" causing the death of a patient.

The association's Council for Professional Ethics and Discipline (MKDKI) announced here Monday it had decided to invalidate the registration number of Dr Thedddeus Octavianus Hari Prasetyono, a plastic surgery specialist, for four months for having performed a fat reduction operation on Dr Atie W Soekandar that led to the latter's death.

"Performing a fat reduction operation on a patient for a second time is very risky. The doctor concerned should have referred the case to a group of experts but he chose to handle it by himself and as a result, the patient died," Dr Marius Widjajarta, chairman of the Indonesian Health Consumers' Empowerment Foundation (YPKKI) said quoting the MKDKI's announcement.

The MKDKI had acted in the case based on a complaint filed by the YPKKI a year ago.

Dr Widjajakarta said he was satified with the MKDKI's ruling whereby Dr Prasetyoono would not be able to practice his profession for four months.

"This is a sufficiently severe penalty. If he is not careful, his very licence could be revoked for good," Widjajakarta said adding his foundation would monitor the implementation of the MKDKI's ruling.

But Harry Suharto, the victim's brother, told reporters his family was not yet planning to take further action on his sister's fate although in his view, a suspension of four months for Dr Prasetyono was too lenient considering that his mistake had cost a person's life.

"But my family will talk it over, and collect more inputs from medical professsionals before deciding whether or not to pursue the case further," he said.
