YUDHOYONO ORDERS PD LEGISLATOR TO MEET KPK SUMMONS
Jakarta, March 31 (ANTARA) - The chairman of the Democratic Party (PD)`s advisory board Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has instructed a PD legislator suspected of involvement in a corruption case to meet a Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) summons immediately, a spokesman said.
"Pak (Mr) Yudhoyono has ordered the PD executive board to inform Jhonny Allen Marbun to skip his campaign activity and meet the KPK`s summons as soon as possible," Andi Mallarangeng, head of the party`s human resources department, told the press in Jakarta on Tuesday.
Yudhoyono who as Indonesia`s president was now in London to attened a G-20 summit had issued the instruction because Marbun had failed to fulfil a KPK summons for questioning on Monday (March 30), Mallarangeng said.
Marbun had been summoned for questioning in a corruption case involving construction of various transportation facilities in eastern Indonesia.
"Marbun must immediately cease his campaign activity and meet the KPK summons," Mallarangeng said, adding he had conveyed the president`s message to PD Chairman Hadi Utomo by telephone.
Asked whether PD was not afraid of the implications of Marbun`s case in which he was believed to have received Rp1 billion from fellow House of Representatives (DPR) member Abdul Hadi Jamal, Mallarangeng said the party was not. "In fact, this case will be another example showing President Yudhoyono`s consistency in fighting corruption," he said.
Mallarangeng who is also one of the president`s official spokeksman said there was no overriding reason for Marbun to continue his campaigning activity and ignore the KPK`s summons.
Meanwhile, KPK spokesman Johan Budi said on Monday, Marbun had asked the commission to postpone his appearance at the KPK office until after voting day on April 9 when the campaigning period for political parties taking part in the legisltive elections was over.
Marbun is vice chairman of the House`s Budget Committee.
