After Sena protests, Kasab lawyer seeks time to decide stand
Mumbai, Mar 31 (PTI) Advocate Anjali Waghmare, appointed
to defend Ajmal Amir Kasab captured during terror attacks here
in November last, Tuesday sought a day from a special court to
consider her stand after angry Shiv Sena activists staged a
demonstration outside her house.
"I am under a lot of pressure... Give me one day to
decide and think over it," an emotional Waghmare told special
judge M L Tahiliyani who will try Kasab.
"The media has exaggerated and is saying that I have
taken up the case voluntarily. There were more than 300
persons outside my house yesterday," she said.
The mob had questioned how she could represent Kasab
despite being the wife of a police official, Waghmare said.
Waghmare, an advocate from Maharashtra Service Legal
Authority, was appointed by the court yesterday to represent
Kasab in the coming trial scheduled to begin on April 6.
A large number of Shiv Sena activists assembled outside
the lawyer's Worli residence in central Mumbai last night
shouting slogans against her.
In a letter to Sena activists, Waghmare said "I respect
the sentiments of people and will withdraw from the case. I
apologise."
Maharashtra Home Minister Jayant Patil said it was for
the court to decided whether to replace Waghmare on the
ground that she was already representing a victim of the
November 26 terror attack.
Security for the lawyer was enhanced following the
protest, senior police officials said. Waghmare also visited
the Mumbai Police headquarters Tuesday after which she
appeared before the special court.
After hearing the Waghmare in court, Special Judge M L
Tahiliyani said she had been following the court's orders by
representing Kasab.
Following the protest outside the advocate's residence it
had become necessary for the court to examine whether contempt
of court proceedings could be issued against arrested members
of the mob for obstructing the court's proceedings by
threatening the lawyer, Judge Tahiliyani said.
Nine persons have been arrested in connection with the
protest outside the lawyer's residence and produced before
a magistrate's court which remanded them to police custody
till tomorrow, Additional Commissioner of Police (Central
Region) Sadanand Date said.
Kasab, a Pakistani national, and two others, Faheem
Ansari and Sabauddin Ahmed, will be facing trial for their
alleged involvement in the November 26 attacks which claimed
160 lives. PTI SP
