PARTY COALITIONS SHOULD NOT ONLY BE FOR POWER-SHARING

Pariaman, Indonesia, April 1 (ANTARA) - Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) figure Hidayat Nur Wahid said political parties should form coalitions for the upcoming presidential election not merely for the purpose of power-sharing.

"The coalitions should not be for power-sharing only but also to ensure that the people's votes in the election can support the programs of the elected president," Nur Wahid, a member of the PKS advisory board, said before concluding a PKS election campaign rally at Merdeka Square here on Wednesday.

Nur Whaid who is also chairman of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) said experience had shown that the programs of the elected president and vice president can be seriously hampered by political issues if the government is not supported by a strong parliament.

Therefore, he said, party coalitions should be strong enough to create a powerful parliament to support the government's programs.

Asked about the coalition the PKS would form with other parties, Nur Wahid said the question would be decided after the results of the April 9 legislative elections had been announced.

"The so-called 'Golden Triangle Coalition' is until now only still an idea that may or may not be realized after the legislative elections," Nur Wahid said.

Referring to the outcome of a recent meeting between PKS and Democratic Party (PD) leaders, he said the agreement reached by the two parties was limited to mobilization of witnesses in the April 9 legislative elections to minimize the possibility of vote manipulation.***
