S`PORE ACCUSED OF COVERING UP REAL CAUSE OF STUDENT`S DEATH

Jakarta, April 1 (ANTARA) - A relative of Indonesian student David Hartono Widjaya who died in Singapore early last March has accused the city state's police of covering up the real cause of his death.

David's brother, William Hartono Widjaja, held a press conference here on Wednesday to point out some odd things surrounding the death of the final semester student at the Nangyang Technology University (NTU) in Singapore.

William accused the NTU management and the Singapore police of having covered up the cause of his brother's death.

He said the NTU is a state university and among the 50 best in the world.

"There were a number of odd facts about my brother's death that the NTU has deliberately disseminated to cover up the case," he said.

The explanation of the NTU's rector, Su Guaning, that David had committed suicide was illogical according to his family.

He said the NTU explained that David had stabbed his counselor, Prof Chan Kap Luk, before jumping off the univrsity building's fourth floor.

"The explanation was given six hours after my brother's death. This is odd. How could they tell while an autopsy had not yet been carried out," he said.

He said the family was also suspicious whey they were not allowed to see David's body before it was cremated by the Singapore police.

"My brother was also said to have stabbed Prof Chan from behind. This was also illogical because no blood stain was found at the scene except a chair which was a high chair to make stabbing from behind impossible to do," he said.

He denied that David had also cut Prof Chan's hand because it was impossible for him to do it while he was planning to commit suicide.

"Typically a person who wants to commit suicide will just do it. If he wants to jump he will just jump. How could it be he first hurt others before making the jump," he said.

He said the family also considered illogical the Singapore police's explanation that the handle of the knife used by David to stab his professor had broken while it was an important piece of evidence in the investigation of the case.

Based on these facts, William said, the family believed that David had been killed, moreover no witness had come up to confirm his alleged suicide.

"My brother was killed before he was thrown out. My brother did not jump but was deliberately thrown out and fell," he said.

He said the wound on David's neck found after his death also indicated that he was murdered.

William said his family expressed regret that they were not allowed to see David's body including removing the cover on his neck wound.

William hoped Australia would immediately make known the result of the autopsy as it was expected to be disclosed not after a month but immediately.

"How could an autopsy last a month. Here it can be done in three days. April 2 would be the anniversary of the first month of my brother's death. It means the autopsy should have been finished," he said.

William also expressed concern over lack of attention to the case from the Indonesian government and embassy in Singapore.

"The government only monitors and waits. The Indonesian government should have pressured Singapore to investigate the case," he said.

He also expressed regret that the Indonesian police had not given any response to the case although David's relatives had come there to report about it twice.

"From the national police headquarters we were asked to go to the foreign ministry but the office then even asked why we did not go to the police headquarters," he said.

A blogger who was seriously following the case, Iwan Piliang, with the consent of David's family would investigate the case with his friends.

According to Iwan, David's death was connected with some research work he was doing.

He said the results of the research on a three-dimensional camera would have a high economic value and was suspected to be connected with Singapore's interest.

"I will verify the cause of his death through his research. By the end of this week, I will go to Singapore to investigate the information," he said. ***
