Very expensive treatment

SANA'A, April,01 (Saba)- The Director of the National Program for
Psychological Health Dhia'a Fadhl affirms necessity of establishing
specialized centers for curing current addicted people "I think
Egypt has succeeded in these curative centers."

"In Dubai, the country established a center for curing addicts and
then it was closed because addicted feared of going to. They prefer
going to private centers or hospitals or traveling abroad," she
added.

She said that curing one addicted costs more than US$ 15000 equals
YR 3 millions. Medications are very expensive and that the addicted
has to undergo six months treatment. If he does not undergo this
complete period treatment, he will not recover.

She sees smuggling drugs substances has increased during wars as the
case in Sa'ada because traffickers exploit the country's business.
Some fighters use them for easing pressure.

Consuming much quantities of drugs

Dr. Yumna al-Aswadi, Member of Life Makers Corporation, who went to
Egypt and participated with physicians in treating addicted people.
She affirms that drugs have been distributed among Yemeni youth.

"There are drugs consuming in Yemen and there is fear of society's
ignorance to the problem," she said. She added:" Ten cases came to
me asking for help but I believe refusal of Yemeni addicted to admit
he is addict refers to several social factors." Although there are
factors concerning penalties through which he could be held
according to the law, they make the problem more difficult.

According to al-Aswadi, the addicted is a patient but it is
impossible to him to admit to the doctor he is addicted only in the
complicated cases. Even the treatment starts from his admission that
he is addicted. In this case the admission is half of the medication.

"In 1960s, the heroin was a medication for easing pains and when the
doctors discovered that it has negative affects, they banned it and
sought other substances," she said. She reiterated that Captagon is
spread in Gulf countries, especially the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as
analeptic. In Yemen, this medication began spreading among bus and
truck drivers who are highway travelers and also among tailors.

She indicates that Yemeni expatriates in the Kingdom were
Captagon-addicted and in Yemen this substance is being currently
taken by schools and university's students.

"There are many stories on youth from Taiz and Mocha. In the
beginning the person is called drugs taker and he is not considered
addicted only in the final stage," she said.

She explains that there are interior and exterior, psychological and
environmental factors can make the individual addicted. She affirms
that the person who is no longer able to bear his situation returns
to drugs "if he can sleep with a dose of five grams of the narcotic
in the first week, he will not be able to sleep in the second week
only by taking ten grams."

She continues the patient is doubling the dose without returning to
physicians till he depends on it and feels that the drugs ease him
and make him forget his problems.

She says that there are some kinds of drugs causing psychological
addicting and others cause psychological and physical addicting.
"Some of addicting cases I saw were rubbing body till bleeding and
hitting head on a wall. Despite these harms consequences, the
addicted continues taking the drugs and this case is called
addicting despite harmful consequences," she said.

"I know a young man whose mother usually expels him from the house
because of taking drugs and even though he continues doing so
without fearing of the consequences," she reiterated. Mostly, the
addicted has evil group and his behavior is depraved. He wastes his
time looking for drugs in every place and pharmacy with his friends.
The drugs take him away from his social life. He soon forgets his
brother's party or his mother's death for example. Soon he indulges
himself with gangs and commits the worst crimes.

She affirms that most of addicted people she met have committed
crimes of adultery with relatives and domestic robberies. "The
drugs take away the brain and their side effects are stronger than
of addicting to wine. The Addicted is discovered quickly and in a
period of five years, the symptoms are shown."

She observes that most of the addicted people have family or social
problems. She says:" addiction come through family suffering and
richness. Hashish, for example, is spreading among Egyptian school
teachers and there is heroin which is considered the king of drugs.

In Lebanon, there are tablets of Kudaein is spread and there is what
are called groups of youth of drugs who are linked to moral
corruption, most of them are infected with Aids and liver hepatitis
B because of exchanging the drugs syringe.

"In general, drugs cause damages to addicted person. Mostly he is
infected with cancer tumors, expose to sterility, Aids and hepatitis
B. Any addicted suffers from depression which sometimes leads to
suicide, because brain affects with drugs and the extra does leads
to death," she concluded.

Drugs prisoners are dangerous victims

Experts think that those who are arrested in drugs issues do not
reach 20 percent of those who works in drug business.

The Head of the Yemeni Prisons Authority Ali Lakhsha'a reveals
incident indicates the danger of prisoners held in cases related to
drugs. He says:" On day, while an officer entered the prisoners'
room, one of the prisoner starts crying and weeping asking the
officer to give him his mobile to call his sick mother to ask about
her."

This prisoner, he says, has already made preparations with other
friends. So when he began the call he made aside talk. Through this
call, the prisoner was able to make a purchase via the officer's
phone.

Through monitoring the phone of the other part in one country which
notified us on receiving a call from some number, we searched for
the owner of this number and discovered that it was to one of the
officers in the prison. This officer, according to information from
the prison, has been fired from his work.

Drugs traffickers spare no efforts for finding any mean for
communication with their gangs. One of these traffickers could
insert five phones to one of the prisons among shoes. Despite strict
inspection, prisoners get the drugs, especially, psychotropic
substances with double prices.

Prisoners are bride of finding new ways for getting the drugs. Some
insert them inside the food such as juices, inside the cake or bread
or inside the mattress, blankets and clothes.
