MINISTER HANDS OVER RELIEF AID TO DAM BURST VICTIMS
Jakarta, April 2 (ANTARA) - Manpower Minister Erman Suparno handed over five tons of rice to victims of the Situ Gintung dam burst tragedy in Ciputat, Tangerang, Banten on Thursday.
The assistance was received by Cireundeu village head Chairul in the presence of local government officials and people around the disaster area.
On the occasion, the minister said the government would also help the victims through Rp200-million subsidy program, and assign public works instructors to speed up the reconstruction of damaged houses.
"On behalf of the government, I would like to express my condolences to the families of victims of the Situ Gintung dam tragedy," the minister said.
He hoped that the assistance would help speed up the recovery efforts so that people displaced by the disaster would soon get homes.
The Situ Gintung dam collapsed early on Friday last week, killing at least 100 persons and causing tens of others to go missing.
The dam burst which followed heavy rains on the previous day had obliterated a 255-meter long section of its embankment, allowing water from its 20-hectare lake to rush out and inundate about 300 houses in its immediate proximity.
The burst occurred at around 2 am local time last Friday when many people were still sound asleep.
