NEWMONT TO CONTRIBUTE RP2.65 TRILLION TO STATE COFFERS

Mataram, April 2 (ANTARA) - PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara expects to contribute Rp2.65 trillion in tax and non-tax income as well as royalties to the state coffers in 2009.

Its general manager, Leigh Taylor, said here on Thursday the contribution was direct benefit for the government from its copper and gold mine in the district of West Sumbawa in West Nusa Tenggara province.

He said when introducing the company`s work plan and budget for 2009 before local officials the company planned to produce 455 million pounds of copper and 485,531 ounces of gold in 2009.

He said the company`s income from sales of copper and gold minus cost of smelting and concentrate purification would reach US$1.149 billion or around Rp12 trillion in the year while the cost of production, shipment, royalties, interest and others totalled US$657.57 million or Rp6.89 trillion.

So, in 2009 PT Newmont is expected to book a pretax profit of US$491.92 million or around Rp5.16 trillion while its net profit is projected to reach US$316.95 million or Rp3.32 trillion, he said.

He said PT Newmont gave a benefit to the country`s economy through tax and royalty payments, salaries for its workers, purchases of goods and services and community projects.

The company`s tax and royalty payments in 2009 are estimated to reach Rp2.65 trillion while in 2008 totalled Rp4.12 trillion. He said the drop in the payments followed a drop in the price of copper in the world market.

"The company expects to pay Rp920 billion in salaries for more than 8,000 employees and contractors working in the Batu Hijau project right now. Most of the employees are local employees recruited from the districts and the province of West Nusa Tenggara," he said.

He said the company`s purchase of goods and services reached Rp4.048 trillion while its community projects were worth Rp42.86 billion so that totally PT Newmont would contribute more than Rp7.66 trillion to the country`s economy this year.

Taylor said that the company`s programs in the health sector and for vocational safety, environment and social responsibility had won awards from the government.

The awards include PROPER Hijau from the office of the minister for the environment, Adhitama from the minister of energy and mineral resources, PADMA for the company`s success in the SRI pattern rice development program and a housing award from the ministry of public housing.

"We will continue to increase our performance in 2009 so that PT Newmont could realize its leadership in vocational safety, environment protection and social responsibility," he said.
