RUPIAH STRENGTHENS TO NEARLY RP11,500 PER DOLLAR THURSDAY AFTERNOON
Jakarta, April 2 (ANTARA) - The rupiah continued to strengthen in the Jakarta interbank spot market here on Thursday afternoon as market players purchased the Indonesian currency in large amount.
The local currency traded at Rp11,515/11,535 per US dollar, up 165 points from Rp11,680/11,690 per US dollar at the market`s close a day earlier.
Market players aggressively bought the rupiah, triggering a significant surge in local unit`s strength, Edwin Sinaga, president director of PT Financorpindo Nusa, said here on Thursday.
The rupiah might reach the level of Rp11,500 per US dollar as had happened last month when the currency was Rp11,430 per US dollar, he said.
The main factor which boosted the rupiah was the recently-issued Indonesian economic data which reflected an improvement in the Indonesian economy amid worsening global economic pressures, he said.
The March 2009 inflation rate, which was quite stable, showed that the government was serious in boosting the country`s economic growth, he said.
The rupiah`s position was relatively strong because market players were optimistic that Bank Indonesia (BI) would enter the domestic money market if the rupiah came under pressure, he said.
