RI`S MICE TOURISM DEVELOPMENT EFFORT NOT TO HARM SINGAPORE
Jakarta, April 3 (ANTARA) - In its efforts to promote itself as a MICE destination, Indonesia does not intend to replace Singapore and will even enrich the city state's tourist destinations, a tourism official said.
"We will not take over any portion of Singapore's tourism market but will instead enrich its tourist destinations," director for MICE affairs at the Culture and Tourism Ministry, Nia Niscaya, said here on Friday.
MICE stands for meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions.
She said there were many attractive tourist destinations in Indonesia which could not be completely explored in just one or two days' time.
"It is the variety of its destinations which Indonesia is offering to Singapore in its efforts to create a single destination," Niscaya said.
She said that Indonesia was willing to enrich Singapore's attractive tourist destinations with its MICE programs in the country.
The tourism ministry official said that so far Singapore was known as a world tourist destination in South East Asia which was most attractive to international tourists.
Niscaya said Indonesia was not less attractive than Singapore including its MICE programs where this year it had decided 10 MICE destinations.
"As a tourist destination, Singapore could be toured in one day only," she said.
In connection with MICE, Indonesia has huge big tourism potentials which had not yet been fully exploited, particularly those outside Jakarta, she said.
In Jakarta alone, for example, the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC) was said to have been fully booked for the staging of various touristic events for the whole year.
"We have to be aware that a MICE torism industry exists and Indonesia has great potentials in this field," she said.
In 2007, the contribution to the state of MICE events totaled 41.23 percent. This year the figure was expected to increase, and this was proven in the first quarter of 2009, where a total 258 big events had taken place in Indonesia.
This year, MICE and marine potentials have been taken up as a theme for Visit Indonesia Year 2009, which has a target of 6.5 million foreign tourist arrivals.***
