BULOG, PRIVATE FIRMS TO PARTNER IN EXPORTING RICE

Jakarta, April 4 (ANTARA) - The National Logistics Agency (Bulog) will partner 10 private companies in carrying out the government's plan to export 100,000 tons of rice this year, Bulog head Mustafa Abubakar said.

He said that of the 10 private companies, none had decided to withdraw from the commitment to exporting rice together with Bulog, although the government had allowed private companies to export rice by themselves.

The Bulog head said that logistics agency had agreed to cooperate with 10 suppliers and seven buyers in implementing the rice export plan.

He said that officials from the ministry of trade and the ministry of agriculture would check in the field to identify all companies which would supply rice to the state-owned logistics agency.

This year Indonesia is ready to export 100,000 tons of premium rice to a number of countries such as Japan, Singapore, Brunei Darussalam and Malaysia.

Previously, the government has decided that rice export should be carried out by Bulog in cooperation with private companies but later it changed its decision allowing private firms to export rice directly.

Abubakar said that the government had not decided how much the portion of the 100,000 tons of rice would be exported by private firms.

He said that up to now, Indonesia had about 140,000 to 220,000 tons of potential quality rice. But according to Abubakar, Bulog has not yet had premium rice stocks in its warehouses so that it has to partner private firms in exporting the good quality rice.

On the realization of the export, the Bulog chief said that the first shipment to destination country was expected to be carried out in May, 2009.

"Basically, the export license is already in hands but we still are waiting for a recommendation from the ministry of agriculture for pre-shipment of the rice export," he said.***2***
