AMBASSSADOR: 50 DIFFERENT RI PRODUCTS NEED MARKETING IN UAE
Abu Dhabi, 5/4 (ANTARA) - Indonesia has about 50 different products which could be marketed in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which include 10 leading export commodities for the Gulf states, Indonesian ambassador to the UAE M. Wahid Supriyadi said here Sunday.
"We are still considering a number of products for marketing to the UAE with the help of the Lulu Hypermarket," Supriyadi said during a conversation with Indonesian journalists.
According to Supriyadi, Lulu Hypermarket owned by Indian businessman Mahendra Patel has 74 branches, 43 of which in the UAE. The products imported from various countries including from Indonesia had been re-exported to some countries in the Middle East.
Working with the Indonesian Consultate Gdneral, the Indonesian Trade Promotion Center in Dubai and the Lulu Hypermaket, the Indoneesian embassy held an Indonesian Festival in all the Lulu Hyperarket branches in the UAE for 12 days.
"Various products like food and vegetables, and Indonesian cultural performances will be shown there," said Supriyadi, who had been assigned in the UAE for 11 months.
Minister of Trade Mari E. Pangestu is scheduled to open the festival during her one-day visit to the UAE.
According to the Indonesian embassy in Abu Dhabi, Indonesia had been exporting 10 leading commodities to the UAE, comprising jewelry, textile, leaher goods, cable and electrical equipment, tyres and rubber, motor vehicles, paper and paper products, iron and steel, cocoa, plywood, and soap.
Indonnesia's jewelty exports were on top of the list worth 305.07 million dollars in 2008, 78.82 percent up compared to 170.6 million dollars in 2007, textile and garments 183.11 million dollars in 2008, 6.27 percent up compared to the 194.6 million dollars in 2007, cable and electric equipment 151.48 million dollars in 2006, 29.24 percent up compared to 117.2 million dollars in 2007,
Potential products Indonesia had exported to the UAE included leather and leather products, jewelry, medical equipment and tools, non-paper writing goods, spices and essential oils.
In the bilateral balance of trade, Indonesia had a surplus of 1.12 billion US dollars. Indonesia's imports from the Gulf state increased 174.29 percent: non-oil/gas worth 290 million sollars, up 145.81 percent, and oil/gas 231 million dollars, up by 221.01 percent compared to 2007.
Indonesia's non-oil/gas exports reached 1.64 billion dollars, up 23.59 percent and oil and gas nil.
In 2008, the UAE imported from 173 countries in the world worth 155.59 billion dollars, up 48.28 percent from 2007.
"Indonesia ranked 19th as main supplier to the UAE in 2008 after Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore," Ambassador Supriyadi said.
He also said that Indonesian products still lacked promotion i the UAE, which needs to be corrected through the Indonesian Festival.
The former Indonesian consul general in Melbourne also hoped Indonesian businessmen take part in the annual festival in Dubai or Abu Dhabi to promote Indonesian products.
