FIVE PARTIES IN MENTAWAI FINALLY ALLOWED TO JOIN POLLS
Padang, W Sumatra, April 4 (ANTARA) - Five political parties in Mentawai Island district, West Sumatra, which had earlier failed to report their campaign fund accounts to the local elections commission have finally been allowed to participate in the April 9 polls.
The district general elections commission made the decision by voting through at plenary session, the local election commission coordinator for legal and organizational affairs, Dafrizal ST, said here on Saturday.
"The decision was taken through a vote after a long debate. Two commission members at the plenary session agreed, one opposed, one abstained and another one was absent," Dafrizal said.
The five political parties which were allowed to participate in the legislative polls, namely the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), the Prosperous Indonesia Party (PIS), the Regional Unity Party (PPD), the Marhaenist Indonesian Nationalist Party and the Indonesian Democratic Love Party (PKDI).
The legislative candidates of the five parties number 22 people, he said.
Previously, the Mentawai general election commission had reported the five parties' failure to the provincial and central general elections commision for their failure to submit their campaign fund accounts and opening balance sheets to the local general election commission.
In its response, however, the central general elections commission instructed the district commission to settle the local problem.
Thus, there would be 26 parties to take part in the upcoming election, while their would be legislators reach 230 people.
According to him, permanent voters list in this island district amounting 44,813 with 219 polling stations.
On March 18, Antara also reported from Padang that some 28 legislative candidates for regional legislative councils (DPRD) for districts and municipality in West Sumatra were likely to face disqualification as they have yet submitted their funds campaign account and opening balance to their respective KPUD offices.
Of the 28 candidates, 22 persons lived in Mentawai Island district, four in Bukittinggi, in the districts of "50 Kota" and Pesisir Selatan respectively one person, head of West Sumatra KPUD Marzul Very added.
A total of 38 political parties and six local parties in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD) province will participate in the legislative general election on April 9, prior to the presidential election in July, 2009. ***1***
