PRESIDENT READY TO FACE REDUCED POPULARITY DUE TO CRISIS

Jakarta, April 6 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said on Sunday night that he was ready to face reduced popularity due to worsening of the country's economic conditions as a result of the global financial meltdown.

"I am ready to face anything with regard to popularity. Actually the people also know survey results that Indonesia is not the only country affected by the crisis and it is not a mistake made by SBY (Yudhoyono)," the president said in an interview with a private TV station.

He said the people also know that all countries in the world were affected by the global economic slowdown.

"What is important for me is to do all the best I could in order to reduce the impact of the crisis. I will do openly and transparently what I can do," he added.

The president also explained all steps the government had taken and would take in facing the impact of the global financial crisis such as providing fiscal stimuli worth Rp73.3 trillion.

He said that half of the amount was to be used to protect people affected by crisis such as farmers, laborers and the poor while the remaining was to be used to generate the development of the real sector in order to prevent increase in the number of unemployed people.

"We have the aim to reduce the impact of the economic crisis and hopefully the economy would recover in the coming one or two years," the head of state said.

He said that the fiscal stimuli was provided not merely aimed at reducing corporate and workers' taxes but also at helping the poor.

"One should really understand realistically the fiscal stimulus policy. Stimuli came not only from taxes," he added.

The fiscal stimuli is also intended to build infrastructure projects so that the problems of layoff victims as a result of the crisis could be resolved, he said.
