POLLS TO GO AHEAD AS SCHEDULED ON APRIL 9 : MINISTER

Jakarta, April 6 (ANTARA) - Home Affairs Minister Mardiyanto affirmed here on Monday the legislative elections are to be held on Thursday (April 9) as scheduled as all regions had expressed their readiness to organize the polls.

The minister made the affirmation after attending a teleconference between him , the General Elections Commission (KPU), the Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu, the National Police chief and all regional police chiefs, governors, regional KPUs, and regional Bawaslu at the National Police headquarters on Monday.

"During the teleconference we found that all regions are ready to organize the polls. We hope the remaining three days will be used in the best possible way to prepare the elections," the minister said.

On the distribution of election logistics, including ballots, the minister said that all elections logistics should have arrived at the polling stations (TPS) one day before voting day.

"The readiness of logistics has reached 98 percent. The remaining two percent have not arrived because the locations of the TPS are difficult to access. This needs time and we still have two days to accomplish this," he said.

Mardiyanto said that all regions had expressed their readiness to help smooth the election logistics distribution.

The minister said that in Papua, the governor, the regional police chief, the provincial military command and regional government officials had cooperated and taken the necessary steps to deliver the election logistics up to the remotest TPS locations.

"This was done so that the logistics could be distributed and arrive on time at the destinations. If difficulties are found, we will take further steps to overcome them," the minister assured.

Earlier, KPU official Abdul Aziz said the election body had distributed almost all logistics to election committees at sub-district level (PPK) and some had arrived at the polls organizers groups (KPPS).

"Some have arrived at the PPK and KPPS. Additional ballots to cover shortages in Yahukimo have also been dispatched by air on Sunday," he said.
