Bengkulu, April 6 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian environmental watchdog (Walhi), Bengkulu chapter, reported illegal ferrous sand mining by PT. Famiaterdio Nagara (FN) at Penago beach, Ilir Talo subdistrict, Seluma district, Bengkulu province, to the marine and fishery ministry.
Former Director of Walhi, Bengkulu chapter, Ali Akbar said by phone that the director general of supervision of the marine and fishery ministry would send a team to the alleged area as reported by Walhi.
"We have provided all the data and therefore the marine and fishery ministry had been urged to take stern action against the perpetrators for exploiting the beach which may harm the preservation of the coastal areas under the management of the marine and fishery ministry," Ali Akbar said.
Supervision Director General Aji Sularso said he would make a research in the reported area following the illegal ferrous sand mining operations by PT FN in Penago Baru and Rawa Indah villages.
Before sending the team, Aji said his side would have to coordinate this issue with some authorities in the home ministry and the environment ministry. After that, he should also coordinate with the Bengkulu provincial and Seluma district authorities.
According to Ali Akbar, the data from Walhi along with the anti-mining network and organization for fishery justice, the marine and fishery ministry has at least issued a statement that the mining should not be continued and recommended the Seluma district administration to immediately revoke mining permit No 35/2005.
