PRESIDENT APPRECIATES POLITICAL PARTIES FOR PEACEFUL CAMPAIGNS
Jakarta, April 7 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has expressed high appreciation to the country's political parties and their elites for having conducted their campaigns for the legislative elections in smooth, orderly and peaceful ways.
Speaking at a meeting where the General Elections Commission (KPU) chief officially reported on the final preparations for the April 9 polls at the State Palace here on Tuesday, the President said although there had been tight competition in the campaigns, the leaders and elites of all political parties had shown they ability to exercise self-restraint.
"The competition on the stages during the campaign rallies was actually tight. There were verbal skirmishes but do not exaggerate this because it is a normal thing in a competition," the president said.
Yudhoyono said there were even negative campaigns with rumors and false or malicious statements but they were positively responded to by all parties.
According to the head of state, the competition during the three-week outdoor campaigns was really tight but all political parties were able to exercise self restraint and proved that the process of democracy in the country was praiseworthy.
He added that such a good momentum should be kept up and maintained because the polls and ballot counts were still two days away.
"Let us maintain this good momentum because two days from now, we will go the polls, then there will be ballot counts, and after that we will have a presidential election," the president said.
In his address on the occasion, the president expressed hope that the KPU and the General Election Supervisory Board (Bawaslu) had been able to make the best possible preparations for the legislative elections.
