BEI INDEX DROPS WEDNESDAY MORNING ON REGIONAL BOURSE LOSSES

Jakarta, April 8 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Composite Stock Price Index (IHSG) at the Indonesian Stock Exchange (BEI) got off to a weak start early Wednesday as regional bourses suffered losses following a slump in the value of shares in the world market.

The BEI index on Wednesday morning opened 0,47 percent or 6.973 points lower at 1,483.884, and the LQ index was down 0.48 percent or 1.497 point at 293.179.

The BEI index had dropped slightly because gains were still made on certain shares, especially shares in the mining sector, a stock market analyst of PT Millenium Danatama Sekuritas, Ahmad Riyadi, said.

Therefore, the Indonesian stocks decreased in value but not as much as those in regional bourses which went down at an average of two percent, he said.

In fact, shares of mining companies such as INCO, Aneka tambang, and PT Timah, went up, he said.

Meanwhile, shares which went down included those of Bank BRI, Bank BNI, Astra Agro Lestari, Indosat and Bank Danamon, he said.

He predicted that the stock trading at BEI would improve at noon if investors continued to buy mining companies' shares.

The Indonesian currency traded at Rp11,425/11,445 per US dollar, down 75 points from Rp11,350/11,400 in the market's close a day earlier.
