THIRTY-FIVE RIVER BASINS IN C JAVA IN CRITICAL CONDITION

Semarang, C Java, April 7 (ANTARA) - A total of 35 river basins (DAS) in several areas in Central Java are now in critical condition as a result of sand mining and illegal logging by the local people, an activist said.

Chairman of the Development Resources Research Center (LPPSP)Kertari said here on Tuesday that sand and stone mining as well as illegal logging were still going on in the region while the local people were not yet aware of the importance of preservation of areas prone to environment damage.

The conditions of the damaged DAS had caused the rivers to be unable to accommodate water volumes when heavy rain fell due to serious river sedimentations.

Kertari said that the government had done its best to prevent the damage of DAS by developing check dams, catchment wells and reforestation of critical land in the surrounding areas of the DAS.

But the government's efforts were not yet enough to improve the conditions of the DAS in the areas so that it was expected that the local people would also take part in the preservation efforts, Kertari said.

He said that there were 128 river basins in Central Java but 35 of them were now in bad conditions.

Kertari said that since May 2008 the World Bank had cooperated with the local government to improve the conditions of the river basin areas in the region, and since then the LPPSP had also provided training on conservation for the local people with regard to the project.

He said that the LPPSP provided training for the local people in an effort to help conserve the water resources in sub-DAS regions in Dulang, Kalong, Kenteng and Probolo areas in Central Java.

"The activities are aimed at arousing the awareness of the local people on the importance of the development and conservation of water resources in the river basin areas," he said.***
