BAD WEATHER FOILS GOVERNOR'S PLAN TO INSPECT ELECTION PREPARATIONS

Banda Aceh, April 8 (ANTARA) - Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD) Governor Irwandi Yusuf was prevented from inspecting election preparations in Aceh Jaya district on Wednesday by bad weather.

The governor had originally planned to make an unscheduled visit to Aceh Jaya after a teleconference with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono but because of bad weather he had to call off his plan.

Governor Irwandi Yusuf was to be accompanied by Aceh Police Chief Insp Gen Adityawarman, Aceh Election Independent Commission (KIP) chairman Abd Salam Proro, and Election Monitoring Committee (Panwaslu) chairman Nyak Arif Fadhillah.

They planned to fly into Aceh Jaya by a police helicopter after the teleconference with President Yudhoyono but their plan was suspended by heavy rain.

In the teleconference, Governor Irwandi Yusuf and several other governors representing 33 provinces across the country reported to the president about preparation in their respective provinces for the election on Thursday.

But only seven governors namely from Bali, South Sulawesi, West Sumatr, Central Java, Jakarta, Papua, and South Kalimantan were able to report to the president in the teleconference that they were ready for the election.

Meanwhile, Governor Irwandi Yusuf said a number of people in Aceh had yet to be listed in the permanent voters list, and consequently they would not be able to exercise their rights to vote in the election on Thursday.
