W SUMATRA BEGINS EXPORTING TUNA TO JAPAN DIRECTLY

Padang, W Sumatra, April 8 (ANTARA)- West Sumatra conducted its first direct frozen tuna fish export to Japan in a cargo plane of Cardig Air on Wednesday, a provincial fisheries official said.

Previously, West Sumatra frozen tuna for export to Japan always had to be sent to Jakarta first, the head of West Suamtra's marine and fisheries office, Yosmeri, said here Wednesday.

A Cardig Air Boeing 737 carrying 15.2 tons of frozen tuna fish took off from Minang International Airport (BIM) at 12:00 noon local time, Yosmeri said.

The plane would make a stopover at Singapore's Changi airport after one hour flying from BIM airport for refueling before proceeding to Japan which it would reach in about six hours, he said.

Cardig Air flights with frozen tuna would be conducted regularly on every Wednesday, he said, noting that the flight frequency could be increased depending on export-import activities.

The provincial tuna export to Japan was previously conducted through Soekarno-Hatta international airport which took longer time, needed higher cost and lowering the fish quality, Yosmery said, without mentioning the tuna exports' value.
