RI AUTO MARKET OPEN FOR INDIA'S TATA NANO

Jakarta, April 8 (ANTARA) - Indonesia is open to any new auto brand, including Tata Nano from India, the chief of the country's Association of Auto Industries (Gaikindo), Bambang Trisulo, said here on Wednesday.

"If Tato Nano wants to enter Indonesia, they can. We have been open to new brands since 1998," he said.

He said anyone who wished to market a cheap car with an engine capacity of 623 cc in the country did not need to become an authorized sole distributor (ATPM).

"If they just want to market their products, they can just open an agency. Just import five CBU cars and sell them here. The question is whether they (Tata Motors) will do it," he said.

He added, however, it would not be easy to secure a market share in Indonesia. He said the manufacturer of the Tata Nano cheap car priced at least Rp24 million would have to set up an assembling plant in the country.

"If they want to compete, they must set up an industry here. That is the policy industry ministry is trying to implement," he said.

He said supppy of parts and after-sales services would be another important factor that would help an auto maker to assure the market that its product was of really good quality.

"Therefore it would take at least 10 years during which they must also have to be able to survive," he said.

Gaikindo's secretary general, Freddy Sutrisno, meanwhile said so far there had been no official information about Tata Motors intention to manufacture or market its products in Indonesia.
PT Indomobil Group's chief commissioner, Soebronto Laras, earlier said that Indonesian people needed brand awareness.

Therefore, he said, it would not be easy for a company to open a market in the country. "We all know how Chinese and Indian motorcycles had tried to compete for a market share in this country," he said.
