YUDHOYONO CALLS FOR SETTLEMENT OF GENERAL ELECTION TECHNICALITIES PRIOR TO PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

Jakarta, Apr 9 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono asked the general election commission (KPU) and its staff to immediately settle a number of technical problems facing the just completed legislative general election ahead of the presidential general election.

"I told the KPU and its staff that the technical problems facing the just completed legislative general election should not recur in the upcoming presidential election," the head of state said at his residence in Cikeas, Bogor, Thursday evening.
In a general sense, the president said the legislative elections completed Thursday ran relatively smoothly, amidst several security disturbances in Papua and technical problems.

With regard to the technical problems, the president said many ballots had been addressed to many different regions, residents in some places who could not participate in the election, and some mistakes in carrying out the polls.
"To correct these shortcomings, however, is the domain of the KPU and its regional offices. But I was hoping for a quick and effective settlement," he said.

As to the fact that many people could not take part in the elections, the head of state said the people needs to be familiarized with the changes in the election requirements as laid down in the general elections law.

The president admited however that there was complexities in the implementation of the law on general election, so that to some extent it also required further socialization to the people.
With regard to the security disturbances in Abepura, Papua, the head of state said the incident had been overcome and political security has been restored.
