FORMER COURT CHAIRMAN CALLS FOR BETTER PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

Jakarta, April 10 (ANTARA) - Former Constitutional Court (MK) chairman Jimly Asshiddiqie hoped that the General Elections Commission (KPK) would organize the July presidential polls better than the legislative elections which was held last Thursday.

"I call on all parties to sincerely accept the results of the legislative elections, although there were many shortcomings such as problems with the voters list," Asshiddiqie said here on Friday.

He said that the people should see boader and collective concern rather than individual interest so that the election stages would proceed successfully.

Asshiddiqie said that the 2009 election was the last polls the Indonesian people would have in the reforms' 10-year transition priod. This year's election was expected to produce a strong and effective government in carrying out the administration.

The constitutional law professor of the University of Indonesia (UI) said that the legislative election results should however be accepted with notes to improve the July presidential electons.

"In the coming two months the KPU has to imporve the voters lists in order to avoid chaos as it happened in the legislative elections," he said.

He said that all parties involved in the voters list such as KPU, the election supervisory board (Bawaslu), the home affairs ministry and the regional government should cooperate in improving the list.

The former MK chairman said that a voter list problem during the presidential elections would create a political chaos that could cause the results of the presidential electons to be cancelled.

"Voters have very close emotional feeling with their presiential candidates so that there is a big conflict potential," he said.

He said that the 2009 legislative election was the worst in Indoneia's general elections history. The 2009 election was the most complicated and difficult as a big number of electoral contestants and voters were involved and regulations were inconsistent.

"The ticking on the ballots also created a problem because it was introduced for the first time without enough popularization," he said. ***1***
