AGU participates in key medical conference

Manama, Nov. 24 (BNA): The Arabian Gulf University (AGU) has participated in the 52nd Conference of the American Society of Nephrology (ASN) held in the US capital Washington
The university was represented in the conference by Internal Medicine Department Head in the College of Medicine and Medical Science Dr. Amgad Elbaz.
The conference, which is considered the biggest annual assembly of nephrologists in the world, witnessed the participation of around 10,000 nephrologists from different countries.
In the conference, Dr. Elbaz reviewed the results of a study conducted in Bahrain titled "Studying the stances of Bahrainis and Arabian Gulf citizens on receiving compensation in consideration for donating a kidney".
Based on a questionnaire, the study discussed being compensated in exchange of donating kidneys with BD10,000 or lifelong insurance.
Dr. Elbaz said that the study was conducted on a sample of 446 participants who answered the questionnaire electronically.
He clarified that the results showed that 80 percent of the 174 male and 272 female participants believed that receiving financial compensation will not impact their decision to donate a kidney, while 20 percent of the participants believed quite the opposite.
The study showed that applying a system of financial incentives to donate kidneys does not have an effect on the potential donors in Bahrain and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.
