POLICE ARREST ALLEGED MASTERMIND OF ABEPURA INCIDENT

Jakarta, April 13 (ANTARA) - National Police Chief General Bambang Hendarso Danuri said here on Monday police had arrested a man believed to have masterminded the attack on a police precinct in Abepura, Papua Province, recently.

"Initial proof has indicated they had committed violent actions, and we are going to process another person suspected of having provoked the attackers," the National Police Chief said after attending a limited cabinet session led by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the Presidential Office here on Monday.

However, he refused to confirm whether the arrested suspects were members of the Free Papua Movement (OPM) or not.

"No, we don't want to mention it (OPM), for sure they are members of an armed group which had violated the law and we will take stern actions," he said.

The group's members had conducted more daring and radical attacks, the general said.

"Since the beginning, they had committed violent actions. Before the implementation of the legislative election, they had attacked a post command, one military man was shot dead, and so on. They had planned the attacks," he said.

Meanwhile, Commander of the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) General Djoko Santoso, also at the Presidential Office said the violent actions committed by OPM members lately showed that they still existed.

"Security disturbance in Papua is only meant to attract attention that they still exist. We are still studying their systematic movement," he said.

The Indonesian Police have earlier named six suspects and grilled eight people as witnesses concerning several attack cases in Abepura.

On last Thursday (April 9), unknown men attacked five new settlers in Wamena, Jayawijaya, Papua. Two persons were killed and several others were injured in the incident.

A police post at Mutung border area was under fire by unknown people.

The latest incident occurred on Sunday evening (April 12), when a bomb exploded near Abepura police office, but no one was injured. ***
