PALESTINE NEEDS US$2,000 BLN FOR INFRASTRUCTURE RECONSTRUCTION

Jakarta, April 13 (ANTARA) - Palestine must raise at least US$2,000 billion in funds to rehabilitate and reconstruct infrastructure destroyed in the Israeli invasion of the Gaza Strip, according to a Palestinian official.

"Many infrastructure facilties were destroyed and can now no longer be used," Al Baba, director of the Palestinian Environmental Quality Authority, said here on Monday.

Some 13 Palestinians are attending a training organized by the Indonesian Public Works Ministry.

According to Al Baba, the Palestinian government must construct around 20,000 houses to replace the ones destroyed by Israel in the Jewish military attacks last December and January. Many Palestinian are now living in emergency camps as their houses have been destroyed by Israel.

They also face sanitation, drinking water and electricity shortages as the concerned facilities were bombed by the Israeli military. Palestine's seaport and airport cannot be used again after being bombed by Israel.

"Not to mention the casualties as Israel used chemical weapon banned to be used in a war. As the consequence, those aging from five to 70 years old have become victims of the weapon," he said.

Al Baba said Palestine needed shelters for its people in case of Israeli military invasion.

"Shelter not bunker, because bunker has a connotation of a war weaponry hide out. We want strong shelters for civilians," he said.

Al Baba said he chose Indonesia for training because he appreciated the support and solidarity given by the Indonesian people to Palestine. Although a European country also offered training, Al Baba and colleagues decided to choose Indonesia.

Meanwhile, Sumaryanto Widyatin, head of the Indonesian public works ministry's human resource development section, said the training included indoor and outdoor activities to enable them carrying out field practices.

At least 1,400 Palestinians, including children and women were killed in the Israeli air bombings in Gaza last December and January. ***
