INMATES ESCAPE FROM WAMENA PRISON IN PAPUA

Jayapura, Papua, April 14 (ANTARA) - At least 40 inmates escaped from a jail in Wamena, capital of Jayawijaya district, Papua province, at 2 a.m. Eastern Indonesian Standard Time (WIT), police said.

Jayawijaya police precinct chief, Adjunct Senior Commissioner, Mulia Hasudungan Ritonga confirmed here Tuesday that the inmates had escaped from prison.

"Some 43 inmates escaped from the Wamena prison. Five of them have been caught later," Ritonga said, adding that two of the five were caught when they were trying to leave their cells and another three arrested outside the prison.
According to him, police continued hunting down the other inmates.

Reliable sources said the inmates escaped through their cell ceiling and after breaking the rear wall.
