INDONESIA NEEDS TO PROMOTE TOURISM SECTOR

Jakarta, Apr 13 (ANTARA) - Indonesia meeds to immediately promote the tourism sector to develop the existing opportunities.

"The opportunity to improve the tourism sector is quite big, because the condition in Indonesia is much better than that in Thailand and Malaysia, especially when it comes to national security," Vice Chairman of the Indonesian Real Estate for Recreation Budi Karya Sumadi said here on Monday.

He further said that as a result of global crisis, many countries which had been relying on exports had to switch to other sectors.

"The exports of almost all countries, including Indonesia, had declined", he said.

Data from the Central Bureau of Statistic (BPS) showed that since the global crisis struck, Indonesian exports continued to decline.
Indonesia's exports in the January-February 2009 period had declined by 34.52 percent to US$14.233 billion compared to US$21.737 billion in last year's corresponding period.

Unlike exports, the tourism sector had been relatively stable.

Based on BPS data, the number of foreign tourists visiting Indonesia in the January-February 2009 period reached more than 894,720, while last year the number reached 903,415,
"This however shows that the tourism sector could become a source of income in the current global crisis," said Budi, the president director of PT. Pembangunan Jaya Ancol.

In addition to political and security stability, other factors which had boosted tourism included promotion, discounts from airline companies and hotels.
