IRANIAN EMBASSY DENIES ITS CITIZENS CAUGHT BY POLICE

Jakarta, Apr 13 (ANTARA) - The Iranian embassy in Jakarta had dismissed reports that Indonesian police has arrested 40 Iranians for their failure in producing identifications, and for their plan to smuggle into Australia.

Spokesman for the Iranian embassy in Jakarta Ali Pahlevani Rad said in an electronic message to ANTARA in Jakarta Monday that those arrested by the Indonesian police were Iraqis, not Iranians.

He said he has asked for confirmation from the Jakarta metropolitan police that the arrested people were Iraqis.

In the meantime, the metropolitan police said the 40 Iraqis were being held in one of the Thousand Islands, Jakarta.

The 40 Iraqis, planning to go to Christmas Island in Australia, consisted of 17 men, 11 women, and 12 children aged 8 to 10 years.

They are now held by the police on Semak Daun island.

All these foreigners only had papers from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) dated April 3, 2009, and valid until June 5, 2009.

They left the Marina Beach, North Jakarta, by Paradise 1, for Opak Kecil island in the Thousand Islands (Kepulauan Seribu).

From that island they boarded a wooden boat "Akila", heading for Christmas Island. However they were intercepted by Indonesian police near Semak Daun island.
