RI, AUSTRALIA DISCUSSING PEOPLE SMUGGLING
Nusa Dua, April 14 (ANTARA) - Senior officials from Indonesia and Australia met in Nusa Dua, Bali, on Tuesday to discuss issues relating to people smuggling, human trafficking and other transnational crimes.
The senior officials' meeting (SOM) preceded the Bali Regional Ministerial Meeting Conference (BRMC) III.
The Indonesian delegation was led by the director general for multilateral affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Reslan Jeni. It was composed of the director for international security and disarmament affairs, Desra Percaya, and other members.
In the meantime, the Australian delegation was led by an official with rank equal to the director general and composed of several other officials from the foreign ministry and the immigration office.
"This meeting is closed to the media. We are not able to provide complete information on the meeting's agenda," Sam E Marentak of the foreign ministry said here on Tuesday.
He said that Indonesian Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda and his Australian counterpart Stephen Smith had arrived in Bali. The two foreign ministers, according to plan, would hold a bilateral talk.
Before they had bilateral talks, Wirajuda and Smith were also scheduled to meet with Timor Leste's Foreign Minister Zacharias Albano in the same place.
Since it was held for the first time in 2002, BRMC which is also known as Bali Process has served as an important regional cooperation framework for the prevention and handling of illegal movement of people.
