POLITICAL PARTIES ADVISED TO RESPOND WISELY TO POLL RESULTS
Jakarta, April 14 (ANTARA) - A political observer from the Institute of Administrative Science (IIP) called on political parties to respond wisely to the conduct and results of the recent legislative election in consideration of the nation's best interest.
Prof Djohermansyah Djohan said here on Tuesday people across the country had exercised their right to vote and this should be made the basis of the upcoming presidential election.
"Dissatisfaction about the poll results is something normal, and therefore its cause should be found out objectively with self-introspection into the internal party itself," he said.
He said if certain parties failed to reach their target in the election, they should make self-introspection before finding out the cause outside the party.
Commenting on a meeting of national figures and political party leaders on Tuesday to respond to the process of the recent legislative election, Djohermansyah said it was only a mobilization of power to gain widespread support.
He warned that the problem which had happened in the legislative election was part of the democratic process in the country, but the General Election Commission (KPU) should honestly admit its shortcomings.
"It should be no problem for the KPU to offer its apology to the people who could not use their right to vote, and then make various improvements in the upcoming presidential election," he said.
The leaders of political parties and a number of national figures met at Indonesian Democratic Party-Struggle (PDIP) chairperson Megawati Soekarnoputri's residence on Teuku Umar street in Menteng on Tuesday to urge the KPU, General Election Supervisory Board (Bawaslu), and the government to follow up reports on alleged fraud in the recent legislative election.
In the statement read out by People's Conscience (Hanura) Party chairman Wiranto, the national figures and the political party leaders said the legislative election on April 9, 2009 was the most terrible one in which millions of people in the country were unable to exercise their right to vote.
The political party leaders who were present at the meeting to sign the joint agreement were among others Megawati Soekarnoputri of PD-P, Wiranto of Hanura Party, Prabowo Subianto of Greater Indonesia Movement (Gerindra) Party, MS Kaban of the Crescent and Star Party (PBB), Bursah Zarnubi of the Reform Star Party (PBR), Ferry B Regar of the Prosperous Peace Party (PDS), Totok Daryanto of the National Mandate Party (PAN), Syahrir MS of the Republican Party, Zulvan Lindan of the Independence Bull National Party (PNBK), Amelia Ahmad Yani of the National People's Concern Party (PPRN), Rusdi Hafafi of the United Development Party (PPP), and Misbah Hidayat of the National Awakening Party (PKB).
Also present were former President Abdurrahman "Gus Dur" Wahid, Sutiyoso, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, and Rizal Ramli.
