GOLKAR SHOULD LET KALLA TEAM UP WITH YUDHOYONO: LAKSONO

Jakarta, April 15 (ANTARA) - The Golkar Party needs to be realistic, abandon its intention to nominate Jusuf Kalla for president and instead maintain him as Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's vice president, the party's vice chairman, Agung Laksono, said.

Speaking to the press at the parliament building here Wednesday, Laksono said the matter would be discussed at a Golkar special national leadership meeting on April 23, 2009 to determine the direction of the party's coalescing approaches.

Laksono said Golkar would maintain its stance and continue its coalition with the Democratic Party, while about vice presidential candidate he added that the party would prioritize its leader, Jusuf Kalla, to be nominated.

"Considering that the tentative ballot count in the legislative election has put Golkar in the second or third place, it is not possible for Golkar to nominate a presidential candidate as intended earlier," Laksono said.

Laksono acknowledged that in a previous discourse based on optimism that Golkar would win the legislative election, Jusuf Kalla had been projected to run for president.

But in reality, Golkar lost the legislative election and therefore the party chairman should now be nominated instead for vice president.

Laksono added that the decision to nominate Kalla as Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's running mate in the upcoming presidential election would be formalized in the special national leadership meeting.

According to him, Golkar desire to pair Jusuf Kalla with Yudhoyono was based on public satisfaction with the present government performance.

"Golkar will certainly give priority to its chairman to pair with Yudhoyono because the people said they were satisfied with the government performance," Laksono said.

Asked about a possibility that Yudhoyono would no longer have Jusuf Kalla his running mate but to choose other figure instead such as Akbar Tanjung, Laksono refused to comment.

But he said the decision to be made in relation with vice presidential candidacy in the special national leadership meeting should be adjusted with Yudhoyono's desire, and so far it was believed that he would maintain Kalla as his running mate.***
