CANADA, BRR RECOGNIZE EACH OTHER`S ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN TSUNAMI RECONSTRUCTION EFFORTS
Jakarta, April 15 (ANTARA) - Canadian Ambassador to Indonesia John Holmes and Aceh-Nias Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Agency (BRR) Director Kuntoro Mangkusubroto signed a "joint statement of achievement" on both sides' accomplishments in tsunami reconstruction efforts.
"We congratulate BRR and the government of Indonesia for their tremendous effort to coordinate the assistance and ensure aid was put to the best use," Holmes said, according to a Canadian Embassy press release issued on Wednesday.
"Canada's contribution to the reconstruction of Aceh and Nias could not have been delivered as effectively without the strong coordination role played by BRR and government of Indonesia. As BRR closes, now is a good time to reflect on the numerous accomplishments and incorporate those lessons learned so that we can better respond to such disasters in the future."
"The Canadian contribution to the post-tsunami recovery of Aceh and Nias has been magnificent. The Canadian Red Cross has now built around 4,500 houses," said Kuntoro.
"In addition, the Canadian government has, through the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), made major contributions in many other areas including livelihood development, governance, capacity building, gender advancement, environmental protection and community strengthening. These and many other initiatives have enabled us to deliver a world-class recovery program to the people of Aceh and Nias. I am deeply grateful to the government and people of Canada for this support," the release quoted Kuntoro as saying.
The Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Agency NAD-Nias or BRR, is a temporary government agency formed by government of Indonesia on April 16, 2005 based on lieu of law no.2/2005, with the mandate to coordinate all post-tsunami rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts in Aceh and Nias.
Over the last four years, BRR has coordinated more than 500 agencies that managed more than 12,000 projects. BRR officially closes on April 16, 2009.
The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) is the government of Canada's lead agency for official development assistance.
Following the Indian Ocean tsunami of December 2004, the Canadian government pledged $425 million (Rp4.0 trillion). CIDA allocated over $200 million (Rp1.9 trillion) to Indonesia.
These funds supported a substantial relief effort immediately following the tsunami, in addition to an ambition five-year reconstruction program, the press release added. ***
