Fifth 26/11 suspect in court, refuses to record statement
Islamabad, Apr 15 (PTI) Pakistani authorities Wednesday
produced Shahid Jamil Riaz, the fifth suspect arrested for the
Mumbai terror attacks, before a magistrate to record his
statement but he refused to do so.
Riaz, who was Tuesday remanded to the custody of the
Federal Investigation Agency till April 18, was brought before
a magistrate in Rawalpindi for the recording of his statement,
his lawyer Shahbaz Rajput said.
"My client refused to give any statement. I was also not
informed that he was being brought to court," Rajput told PTI.
An anti-terrorism court in Rawalpindi had yesterday
extended the judicial remand of four other suspects in the
case -– Lashker-e-Taiba operatives Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, Zarar
Shah, Hamad Amin Sadiq and Abu al Qama -– by two weeks till
April 28.
Rajput, who also represents the four other suspects, said
that according to legal norms, their trial should begin on
April 28 with the presentation of the chargesheet against
them.
The judge of the anti-terrorism court too has asked for
the chargesheet to be filed by the next date of hearing for
the four suspects. However, official sources told PTI this was
unlikely to happen as investigators still had some more ground
to cover in their probe.
Earlier in the day, diplomatic sources had dismissed
reports that Riaz, who played a key role in facilitating the
transfer of funds to Europe for planning and carrying out the
Mumbai attacks, would be handed over to India.
Investigators had zeroed in on Riaz in February though he
was officially shown as arrested earlier this month. It is
believed he was questioned by intelligence agencies before
being handed over to the FIA, which is overseeing the
Pakistani probe into the attacks.
Lakhvi, Shah, Sadiq and al Qama are currently being held
in Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi and legal proceedings against
them are conducted in a special court within the prison.
The special public prosecutor and an FIA official has
informed the anti-terror judge handling their case that the
suspects are active members of the banned Lashker-e-Taiba and
were charged with facilitating and coordinating the Mumbai
attacks.
The four LeT operatives have been charged under the
Pakistan Penal Code, an anti-terror law and the cyber crimes
law. PTI RHL
