CANADA, RI RECOGNIZE SIGNIFICANT ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF RECONSTRUCTION EFFORTS

Jakarta, Apr 15 (ANTARA) - Canadian Ambassador to Indonesia John Holmes and Head of the Aceh-Nias Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Agency (BRR) Kuntoro Mangkusubroto signed a joint statement of achievement recognizing their respective accomplishments in the delivery of the tsunami reconstruction efforts.

"We congratulate BRR and the Government of Indonesia for their tremendous effort to coordinate the assistance and ensure aid was put to the best use," Holmes said in a press statement on Wednesday.

He said Canada's contribution to the reconstruction of Aceh and Nias could not have been delivered as effectively without the strong coordination role played by BRR and the Indonesian government.

"As BRR closes, now is a good time to reflect on the numerous accomplishments and incorporate those lessons learned so that we can better respond to such disasters in the future," he said.

Kuntoro said meanwhile the Canadian contribution to the post-tsunami recovery of Aceh and Nias had been magnificent. "The Canadian Red Cross has now built around 4,500 houses."
In addition, the Canadian government has, through the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), made major contributions in many other areas including livelihood development, governance, capacity building, gender advancement, environmental protection and community strengthening, he said.

CIDA is the government of Canada's lead agency for official development assistance. Following the December 26, 2004 tsunami Canada pledged $425 million. CIDA allocated over $200 million to Indonesia.
