GOVT SETS 2010 ECONOMIC GROWTH TARGET AT 4.5-5.5 PCT

Jakarta, April 15 (ANTARA) - The government has set its economic growth target for 2010 within a range of 4.4 percent to 5.5 percent in order to revive the country's economy and improve the people's welfare.

"The economic growth target will be set within a range of 4.4 percent to 5.5 percent," National Development Planning Minister Paskah Suzetta said here on Wednesday.

The minister said with the economic growth target set in that range the poverty rate in 2010 would drop from its 2009 level. "In essence, 2010 will be a year of economic recovery and welfare improvement," he said.

Suzetta also said the government would expand programs for bureaucratic remuneration in 2010.

Earlier this week, the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) estimated that this year's economic growth would undergo a significant decline.

Bappenas director of macro development Bambang Prijambodo said here Sunday the export decline became apparent since the fourth quarter of last year during which exports reached 0,9 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP) compared to the 5 percent in the third quarter.

Demand for consumer goods and investment had also been declining in view of the current global economic crisis.

"Nevertheless, Indonesia's economy is still growing by a higher rate than those of the other Asian countries," he said.

He said the economy of other Asian countries had been predicted to continue to decline, and under these circumstances the government needs to bring about a price stability and raise the value of the rupiah.

Bambang also agreed with Bank Indonesia (BI) which had predicted that the Indonesian economy in the first quarter of 2009 would drop by less than five percent.***
