MINISTER PRAISES HORTICULTURE DEVELOPMENT IN SOUTH MINAHASA
Manado, N. Sulawesi, April 15 (ANTARA) - Agriculture Minister Anton Apriyantono praised the people of Modoinding sub district, South Minahasa, North Sulawesi, for having cultivated horticultural crops to a level where the produce were now marketed overseas.
Potatoes, vegetables and other horticultural products from South Minahasa are the best in Indonesia and preferred by international consumers, the minister said when attending a National Potato Week expo in South Minahasa on Wednesday.
Speaking before around 250 farmer groups from across the country and 5,000 farmers grouped in the Indonesian Farmers' Association (HKTI), and other farmer groups, the minister said farmers in other parts of the country should emulate the performance of South Minahasa farmers in the cultivation of horticultural crops.
The minister also expressed the goverment's readiness to provide South Minahasa farmers with assistance to further develop their horticultural plantations so that they could turn out super commodities and thus contribute significantly to improvement of the local economy.
After attending the expo, Apriyantono joined farmers in a potato harvest and observed the commodity's cold storage facilities. Later , he held a dialogue with the farmers.
At the National Potato Week expo, the minister sent off a convoy of trucks that would take vegetables grown by Modoinding farmers to North Sulawesi ports for further transportation to cities in other parts of Indonesia such as Balikpapan, Jayapura, Palu and Makassar.
